DIY = Do It Yourself
Recycled, Repurposed, Renewed, Upcycled
The DIY Loft is the studio workshop of designer and do-it-yourselfer Gretchen Spence. You are invited to join Gretchen in her loft-space for hands-on creativity, friendly instruction and "make-it then take-it" fun.
Upcycling is the theme of the DIY Loft. Old stuff (trash even) is made into new stuff: outdated magazines become colorful beaded necklaces, felt scraps become hair bobbies, scrabble tiles are now photo pendants, vinyl records are wall clocks, Nancy Drew books are purses, new projects are popping up all the time!
Located near downtown Los Angeles, the DIY Loft is part of a 20-acre artists' community called The Brewery. The DIY Loft is in a converted industrial building near the 5 freeway and North Main Street.
For over 10 years, Gretchen has worked out of her loft space creating gifts and accessories for corporate clients while spending her weekends giving art and architecture tours in downtown Los Angeles. Gretchen's sunny personality and artistic insights make for great entertainment according to her tour-goers. The LA Conservancy and the MTA MetroArt program have recognized Gretchen for her contributions.
Gretchen is originally from Portland, OR where she spent her formative years in her Grandfather's workshop making jewelry from old silverware and sculpture from paper-mâché. Like all good Portlanders, Gretchen has been recycling and bicycling since childhood.
Through the 1990s, a generation of skateboarders sought out Gretchen after she figured out how to put a working bottle opener on the inside of a belt buckle. Gretchen went on to design and produce accessory items for Quiksilver, Roxy, Virgin Records, Transworld Media and Seven for All Mankind.
